Dental Health Myths

Woman teeth

dental-disEveryone knows that it is very important to take care of your teeth, but it is even more important to stop believing the many teeth health myths that are floating around.

Oral hygiene is essential, but many people believe that they can eat anything they want as long as they brush their teeth correctly afterwards.  The reality is a bit different, tough: teeth need vitamins and minerals, the most important being magnesium, calcium, vitamins A and C.

All of these can be found in fruits and vegetables, for example. However, there are foods and drinks that can damage the teeth: candies, soft drinks, and even fruit juice. Hospital CEO Louis Kraml states that it’s important to understand that everything we put in our mouths and is an acid or has a lot of sugar will attack the teeth no matter how quickly we brush the teeth afterwards.

Some of us were taught to brush out teeth as hard as possible, in order to keep them healthy. The truth is that if the gums and teeth are brushed too hard, the gums may be harmed and suffer. When the gums are in recession, the root of the tooth is exposed, and this may even lead to losing the tooth.

Specialists advise us to use an electric toothbrush, which can do the scrubbing in our place, or at least brush our teeth softly, in an effort to improve their health. Recent research shows that brushing for two or three minutes is more than enough, and that the tongue should be brushed as well.

dental-Many people consider that bleaching the teeth can be very harmful to teeth, while the specialists do not agree with that. They even declare that teeth bleaching is a one hundred per cent safe process. If you go this route, you should be aware that the first teeth that should be whitened are the front ones, since this is a good way of noticing the difference, and thus decide whether you want to move on with the bleaching or not. Remember that bleaching should always be done by a dentist.

The mouth is one of the major ways viruses and bacteria get into the body, so keeping the mouth clean is very important for the health of the entire organism. Brushing correctly is not only getting us cleaner teeth and healthier gums, but also a fully functional, healthy body. If oral hygiene is lacking, there will be gum infections and the risk of losing teeth increases dramatically.

Woman teethThere are false beliefs concerning kids’ teeth as well. For example, there are parents who consider that they should not take care of the teeth of their little babies because they are not permanent. In a nutshell, since the baby will get rid of those teeth anyway no attention should be paid to them.

Nothing could be more wrong than that; if a baby loses his or her teeth too early due to poor oral hygiene, for example, the risk of having crowded teeth in the adult life increases a lot. Baby teeth decays may lead to infections, pain and it can also have a negative impact on the permanent teeth.
