foo22Fast food is big business these days and many people visit fast food outlets on a regular basis. Fast food may be a cheap and convenient option, but it could be doing your health some serious damage.

In 2003 researchers in the USA revealed the results of a study, which suggested that fast food could be as addictive as drugs. The study claims that people can become reliant on fast food, in the same way that they turn to drink and drugs.

Fast food can also be an appealing option for people, especially in this day and age, as it is quick and does not involve any preparation and is very often cheap as well.

Implications of eating fast food

Most people like a take-away now and again and this will not do you any harm, but eating fast food on a regular basis could potentially be very damaging. Fast food is often high in salt, sugar and saturated fats, all of which contribute to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a subsequent increase in the risk of conditions including diabetes, heart disease and strokes. Some forms of cancer are also linked to being overweight and eating a poor diet. Obesity is a modern epidemic and the number of people requiring extreme treatments such as gastric band surgery and gastric bypass surgery (forms of weight loss surgery) is increasing year on year.

food-22As well as the damage some foods do to the body, you will also suffer because your diet is not providing your body with the essential nutrients it needs to function properly. Your body relies on the food you eat and if you do not provide it with the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs, it may not be able to function normally and you may start to experience related illnesses. Your immune system may also become weaker, which will increase your susceptibility to infections.

Making healthy food choices

An occasional trip to a fast food outlet will not kill you, but if you eat fast food on a regular basis you will increase your risk of health problems. It is possible to cook many of the classic take-away favourites at home and this is much better for your health, as you can control the amount of oil, salt and sugar added to the meal. It can also save you a huge amount of money in the long-run. Grilling and baking meals is much healthier than frying and your meal will taste just as good.
